The Rich History and Residential Character of Allerton
Allerton is a working-class neighborhood geographically located in the East Bronx section of the Bronx, New York City, named in honor of Daniel Allerton, an early Bronx settler who purchased and farmed this area with his wife Hustace. The neighborhood consists of two subsections called Bronxwood and Laconia. Its boundaries, starting from the north and moving clockwise, are Adee Avenue, Boston Road, and Gun Hill Road to the northeast; the IRT Dyre Avenue Line (5 train) to the east; Waring Avenue to the south; and Bronx River Parkway to the west. White Plains Road and Boston Road are the primary thoroughfares through Allerton. The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community Board 11, and its ZIP Code is 10467. The area is patrolled by the NYPD’s 49th Precinct.
The history of Allerton is deeply rooted in the story of the Lorillard family, one of New York’s most prominent colonial-era families. A French Huguenot family, the Lorillards settled in the area which is now known as Allerton as well as parts of the New York Botanical Garden back in the late 1700s. The family became extremely successful in the tobacco industry, and their company would eventually give rise to Lorillard Inc, which makes Newport, Kent, and other cigarettes. By 1840 they had built what is now known as The Snuff Mill at the New York Botanical Garden, where “tobacco was ground into smokeless, powdery form called snuff, which could be flavored and inhaled”.
The neighborhood as we know it today was born in 1917, just three years after the Bronx became an official county. The descendants of the original Lorillards decided to sell off parts of their estate and carved them up into lots, which gave way to the many homes and buildings that eventually became the Allerton neighborhood. The auction partitioned the property into 1,445 lots, and the auction was set to benefit not just the remaining descendants but also the New York Public Library. It was no coincidence that the 2 subway line along White Plains Road had already begun operation in March of 1917—just three months prior to the auction of these lots—making this area that was once rural in nature, prime real estate at bargain prices. The original name of the neighborhood—Bronxdale or Laconia depending on where in the area you were—never really stuck, and for as long as many could remember, it was simply referred to as Allerton. It was not until 2014 that the area officially became known as Allerton when efforts by local residents to push for this official recognition from the city came to fruition.
Today, Allerton is a vibrant and diverse community that enjoys a peaceful residential vibe. Brick row houses make up much of the residential offering. The neighborhood is home to a rich array of cultural communities, reflected in its local businesses. You can eat Dominican mofongo, Jamaican patties, Italian pizza, or Bangladeshi biryani—all on one street, with popular spots including Allerton Diner, Bangla Bazaar, and Burke Avenue Bakery. Many shops are family-run and have been here for generations. Local organizations like the Allerton International Merchants Association support residents and small businesses, while the Allerton branch of the New York Public Library serves as a hub for learning and youth programs. The “Not on My Watch” nonprofit in Allerton provides support for women and young girls, offering human trafficking awareness, teen dating and domestic violence training, and a free six-week summer program called SELFIE (Self Esteem Lessons For Individual Empowerment).
The Importance of Tree Care in Allerton
Allerton’s tree canopy is one of its greatest assets, providing essential cooling, clean air, and quality of life for residents. The neighborhood’s location adjacent to Bronx Park East, with its trails that wind around a forest and recreational courts, offers residents access to significant green space. The park is “just as viable as Van Cortlandt Park when it comes to greenspace,” providing a peaceful escape from busy Manhattan or even other parts of the Bronx. The energy in Bronx Park on a Friday night is fantastic enough to make it hard to leave. From there, residents can watch the sun set in the park before making their way to one of the local restaurants for dinner or ending their night at a local bar.
Allerton Playground, located on Allerton Avenue between Throop Avenue and Bouck Avenue, provides additional recreational green space for the community. Magenta Playground, located at Rosewood Street, contains multiple play structures, open green spaces, and recreational areas designed to accommodate children of different age groups, functioning as a central point for neighborhood gatherings where families from diverse backgrounds connect through shared activities.
The Bronx has faced significant challenges with equitable tree distribution, but the South Bronx area, which includes Allerton, has seen targeted efforts to plant trees and generally green the area. These efforts include initiatives like Trees for Public Health, which was informed by local health data such as childhood asthma rates, and the Cool Neighborhoods NYC program. The Bronx has shown a trend of larger canopy increases in areas with lower per capita incomes, higher percentages of people of color, and higher heat vulnerability. However, even though the South Bronx has experienced fairly large relative increases in canopy, it started with very little tree cover, so it has a long way to go before it will have substantial canopy cover.
The importance of professional tree care in Allerton is underscored by a recent News12 report about an Allerton resident concerned about a “problem pin oak” tree across from her Bronx Park East apartment building. According to the report, a giant oak tree has been dropping limbs, damaging cars in the area. One resident said a tree limb fell on her Honda, shattering her windshield. Within the last month, three more cars were damaged by limbs falling from the same tree. The resident filed multiple 311 complaints after inspecting the tree and seeing visible rot, but the cases were closed immediately. This incident demonstrates the serious risks that unmaintained, diseased, or damaged trees pose to property and safety, highlighting the critical importance of professional tree inspections, maintenance, and timely intervention.

Bronx Tree Services offers a full spectrum of tree care solutions to meet the diverse needs of Allerton property owners. Our comprehensive services ensure that your trees remain healthy, safe, and aesthetically pleasing.
Tree Removal in Allerton
Tree removal is one of our most requested services in Allerton, where mature trees on residential streets often grow close to homes, apartment buildings, and infrastructure. Dead, diseased, or structurally compromised trees can pose serious risks to your property, family, and neighbors. Our team of experienced arborists approaches every tree removal project with precision and care, using state-of-the-art equipment to safely remove trees of all sizes and species.
The process begins with a thorough assessment of the tree’s condition, its location, and any potential obstacles such as power lines, buildings, or other structures. We develop a tailored removal plan that minimizes disruption to your property and ensures the safety of our crew and everyone nearby. From small ornamental trees to massive oaks that have stood for generations, we have the expertise and equipment to handle any tree removal challenge in Allerton.
We understand that removing a tree is often a difficult decision for homeowners. Our arborists provide honest assessments and recommendations, helping you make informed decisions about your trees. If removal is the best course of action, we complete the job efficiently and thoroughly, leaving your property clean and safe.
Tree Cutting in Allerton
Professional tree cutting encompasses a range of services beyond full removal. Selective tree cutting involves the careful removal of specific trees or branches to achieve a desired outcome, such as improving sunlight exposure, creating space for new construction, or enhancing the aesthetic of your landscape.
In Allerton, where residential properties are often close together and tree-lined streets are a defining feature, proper tree cutting is essential for maintaining safety and good neighborly relations. Our tree cutting services can selectively thin trees and branches to prevent them from encroaching on neighboring properties or interfering with power lines. We also provide tree cutting for land clearing, property development, and storm damage cleanup.
Our tree cutting techniques prioritize the long-term health of your landscape. We use proper cutting methods that promote healing and prevent disease, ensuring that the remaining trees continue to thrive for years to come.
Stump Grinding in Allerton
Stump grinding is an essential service that addresses the unsightly and potentially hazardous remnants left behind after a tree has been cut down or removed. Tree stumps can be dangerous tripping hazards, attract pests like termites and carpenter ants, and detract from the beauty of your landscape.
Our stump grinding service uses powerful machinery to grind stumps down to below ground level, effectively eliminating the stump and allowing you to reclaim the space for new landscaping, gardening, or construction. The grinding process is efficient and leaves behind wood chips that can be used as mulch or removed entirely based on your preference.
We perform stump grinding on properties throughout Allerton, including residential yards, commercial properties, and public spaces. Our equipment is designed to access even tight or challenging locations, ensuring that every stump can be effectively removed.
Emergency Tree Services in Allerton
Severe weather events can strike at any time, and in Allerton, the combination of mature trees, urban infrastructure, and residential neighborhoods can create particularly hazardous conditions. High winds, heavy snow, and ice storms can cause branches and entire trees to fall, blocking roads, damaging structures, and creating dangerous situations.
Our emergency tree services are available around the clock to provide rapid response when you need it most. When you call us for emergency assistance, we dispatch our team immediately to assess the situation and develop a safe and effective plan of action. We prioritize clearing debris to restore access to your property and address any immediate hazards.
Our team is equipped to handle emergencies of all sizes, from fallen branches to uprooted trees that have damaged homes or power lines. We work quickly and safely to resolve the situation and minimize further risk to your property and family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Services in Allerton

We recommend having your trees inspected at least once a year by a certified arborist. Annual inspections can identify potential issues such as disease, pests, structural weakness, or root problems before they become serious or hazardous, as demonstrated by the damaged oak tree on Bronx Park East that was dropping limbs onto parked cars. The New York City Parks tree map indicated that the tree in question hadn’t been inspected since November 2021, highlighting the risks of delayed inspection.
What are signs that a tree on my Allerton property needs to be removed?
Common signs that a tree may need removal include dead or dying branches, visible decay or cavities in the trunk, fungal growth at the base, significant lean, root damage, proximity to structures or power lines, and extensive damage from severe weather events. Our arborists provide free hazard inspections to assess your trees.
Is a permit required for tree removal or tree work in Allerton?
Permit requirements vary depending on the specific location and the nature of the work. Our team is familiar with local regulations and can help you navigate the permit process, ensuring that all necessary approvals are obtained before work begins.
What is the best time of year for tree trimming in Allerton?
Late winter or early spring is generally considered the best time for tree trimming, as trees are dormant and less susceptible to disease. However, we can perform tree trimming throughout the year as needed for safety, health, or aesthetic reasons.
How soon can I expect a response for emergency tree services in Allerton?
We provide rapid emergency response and are available 24/7 to address tree-related emergencies. When you call our emergency line, we dispatch our team immediately and strive to arrive at your property as quickly as possible.
